My Husband's Story: How We Found Out We Were Pregnant

“YOU ARE PREGNANT!” said the Doctor. “Bloody hell, I knew it, I knew it!” I said, in the most self-absorbed, yet elated tone at the time.

Prior to this, sat on one of the chairs of the Gyno, I kept thinking of scenarios whilst wifey was on the examination table/chair, that this trip to the doctor would end up in us being pregnant. That all along, what the doctors had been saying and the tests that we had done were all a goose chase for this very moment.

Infertility was never an option for us as Joanna would never give in. She knew that her battles through Endometriosis was in no way going to define her future. IVF was her only option apparently and she was going to conceive no matter the number of rounds it took.

After concluding our time in Dubai, we decided that it was time for us to resume the process for IVF and head to France where it was a lot more affordable and accessible.

The move was in no way easy as we had to make arrangements to transport our newly adopted fur balls as well. Needless to say, we got it done. Scratches and bruises later we got out. Thank god for that.

Joanna and the fur balls, off to France while I had to travel back to Sri Lanka to sort out my Visa first. A week later and I am in France. First impressions, holy shit it was cold! I was in no way shape or form prepared for this. All my life I had lived in the tropics and the Middle East prior to this so you can imagine, I had no winter clothes or layers of any kind, just my good ‘ole flip flops, a couple pairs of shorts and t-shirts - a bit of a white lie there but that’s the stereotype isn’t it.

We knew coming to France was about getting the IVF process started as soon as possible. Christmas was just around the corner so there was no choice but to delay this till the next year.

The rush of holidays meant that we could only get an appointment sometime later in January and there was no way we could push it forward. If someone in your family has/had Endometriosis or know someone who does or just knows about the disease in general, you know that the more you age, the lower your chances are of conceiving, especially via IVF.

The days went by and judgement day finally approached. A Spermogram was first on the list of things to do. Easy peasy it was as you can imagine. The morning was essentially spent at the hospital getting our papers and tests done.

The afternoon came, and thats when we had our Gyno appointment at the fertility clinic. Dr. Gaaiid, god we love that woman. Now looking back, I just knew, I had the cockiest smile on my face at the time, I was Mr. Positive all the way. Joanna says its horrible being all that Positive all the time but you know, I’d rather be the guy who is. Just got no time for negativity.

Anyhow as you’ve already read, what followed was the result of a lifetime. We were numb, dumbstruck, shell shocked. We just couldn’t believe it. I know how hard life has been for Joanna. I just looked at her and smiled while tears started gushing down her face.

And kids, thats how it all began.
